LELAND - JENNETTE 'HIGGINS ' - Lamoine, 1897

JENNETTE    'HIGGINS'  LELAND

Bar Harbor Record
March 24, 1897

Seldom is death more unwelcome then last week in that of Capt. Alden B. Higgins at East Lamoine.  His oldest daughter, Mrs. Jennette, born in 1861, was married eleven years ago to Mr. Stephen Leland, of Trenton.  For five years she gave herself with rare devotion to her own and her husband's home.  On the death of her mother, she returned with her husband to to her father's household to take as far as could be her mother's place.  One who had long watched her in the discharge of the many and delicate offices of this somewhat complicated relationship and to the officiating clergyman, Rev. T.F. White at her funeral of the selections, "Not a sparrow Falleth" fell as the Masters own words on all hearts.  "There will be no dark valley" and "Beloved, it is well," though more familiar then the first selections, took on fresh meaning by their beautiful rendering.  Seldom is the mucical part at a funeral so helpful.  Like the odor of Mary's alabaster box its spirit must long linger with those who were in such sad need of help.
