Dr. Herbert Preble Higgins, 83, Bar Harbor dentist, died last night at the Mount Desert Island Hospital following a lng illness.
He was born in Eden February 12, 1871, the son of the late Charles and Elmira (Conners) Higgins.  He was educated in the local schools, Coburn Classical Institute and graduated in 1906 from the Philadelphia Dental
College (which later became the dental college of the University of Pennsylvania).
Prior to his professional education he was owner and proprietor of the Marlborough House (later the Newport House annex) in Bar Harbor.
His wife, Blanche, died last year and his son  Charles Stevens Higgins died in 1939.
He is survived by two grand daughters, Mrs. Lawrence C. Grant of Bar Harbor and Mrs. Douglas M. Fowler of Roselle, Ill., and six great grandchildren.
In recent years Dr. Higgins had the distinction of being the oldest (in years of membership) living member of Bar Harbor Lodge F & AM.  He possessed a 50 year medal and was an honorary member of the Lodge.  He was a member of St. Saviour's Episcopal Church.
Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Sherman Funeral Home with Rev. Ralph H. Hayden officiating.  Internment will be at Ledgelawn Cemetery.
