Capt. William Barnes, of Woolwich, died March 1.  He was born Feb. 15, 1797.  He entered the United States service early in 1813, joining the brig Enterprise.  He was engaged in the battle with the Boxer, left the Enterprise to join the Alligator, and was commissioned to carry the news of peace to Admiral Cocbran, whose squadron was crusing off the Georgia  coast.  Immediately after peace he entered the merchant service, from which he did not retire till 1861.
