YOUNG - ELBRIDGE G. - Otter Creek, 1888

ELBRIDGE  G.  YOUNG

Mount Desert Herald
August 3,  1888

Concerning the death by suicide of Mr. Elbridge G. Young, at Otter Creek, we learn that Mr. Young has several times threatened to take his own life,  and had also threatened the life of his wife.  On the morning of his death he became excited and jealous because of a call from a man, who wished to engage Mrs. Young to work for him.  He talked very harshly and as she left the house, which she did through fear and only for the purpose of waiting until his insane paroxysm subsided, his last words were, "If you come into the house again I will cut your throar."  His widow asserts that Mr. Young was a kind husband when in his right mind, and that she has never been - as has been stated - "dissatisfied with her lot,"   or desired to leave him, but that (as on the day of his death)nshe has been obliged to leave the house temporarily several times through fear of her personal safety when these insane fits came upon him;  and that she has many times told his friends that she thought him subject to attacks of insanity, but they would not believe her.  Aside from the generally accepted idea that any man who takes his own life is of unsound mind, all the circumstances go to show that Mr. Young had been insane at times for several years.  Over a year ago, and before he had married his last wife or had even seen her, he was despondent and took a dose of poison,  It is said - from the effects of which he barely escaped with his life.

BUNKER - EMERSON U. - South Gouldsboro, 1888

EMERSON  U.  BUNKER

Bar Harbor Record
Jan.  26,  1888

South Gouldsboro, Jan. 21, 1888
Our neighborhood was greatly shocked last Sunday when the news was received of the death of Emerson U. Bunker, youngest son of Charles L. and Rosetta Bunker, who died in Brighton, Mass. from pneumonia, after an illness of nine days.  The remains were brought home last Tuesday for burial.  His brother George and mother, who had been in Brighton caring for him during his illness, came with them.  It is very sad when we remember that this is the third son that Nr. and Mrs. Bunker have lost almost within a year, and being the youngest of the family and one of the most promising young men of the community, his death, coming as it does under such sad and peculiar circumstances, is an affliction and grief unspeakably prostrating and lamentable to his folks, especially to the heart-broken mother.  It is an affliction beyond the power of any human physician to heal;  a grief beyond the power of human words to reconcile.  The deepest sympathy is felt by friends and neighbors for the brreaved family, carrying with it a sad regret for the loss of a dear friend and of an intelligent and worthy young man, to the community.  The deceased was almost twenty years old.  He early entertained desires to obtain a good education and fit himself for a business or professional avocation.  He was ever found, an attentive scholar in our district schools and attended several terms in adjoining districts up to the age of seventeen when he entered the Rockland Commerical College and graduated from that institution last spring.  His special accomplishment was penmanship.  He was clerk of the Hotel Des Isles at Bar Harbor during the season of 1887, which position he filled to the satisfaction of his employer and, by his social disposition, made many intimate acquaintances among the guests.  At the time of his illness he was with the firm of Phillbrick Bros., at Brighton, Mass..  B.E.T.

CLARK - DAVID - Seal Cove, 1883

DAVID  CLARK

Mount Desert Herald
Feb.  15,  1883

Mr. David Clark was born in Surry, in 1802.  He was a prominent member of the Free Baptist Church.  He was a joiner by trade, and served his neighbors for several years in that capacity.  He died at his home in Tremont, Jan. 15,  1883 at the age of eighty years, having "come down to his grave in full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in his season."
Until his health became enfeebled, Mr. Clark was a constant attendant at church.  He will be greatly missed by members of his family and neighbors, and will be remembered as an earnest, true and upright man.  Of such it may be said;
The death change comes
death is another life, they bow their heads,
at going out, they think, and enter straight
another golden chamber of the King;s
larger than these they leave, and lovier.

HINCKLEY - JOSEPH - Blue Hill, 1884

JOSEPH  HINCKLEY

Mount Desert Herald
November 28,  1884

Dead in Blue Hill, Saturday morning, November 8, 1884, Dea. Joseph Hinckley, in the 87th year of his age.
The deceased was for many years one of the senior deacons of the Congregational Church here, and worthily did he fill that office.  He was a man of strong faith, of lively hope and of adent geal in the course of the Master.  Few if any, did more toward advancing the interests of the church and parish than be.   His last days were especially peaceful, notwithstanding his bodily sufferings;  and for weeks he was patiently waiting the call, "come up higher."
The funeral services were held at his late residence, led by the Rev. E.R. Osgood, who preached a very approprate and impressive sermon on "Life in Heaven," followed by prayer by the Rev. L.S. Tripp, (Bapt.) and singing by a quartette choir led by Mr. C.C. Cough.  The sermon, the hymn song, and the prayer only deepened the conviction already had, that a good man has fallen.
Thus within two weeks of each other has our two oldest church members passed away, the other, Dea. Benjamin Atherton, being in his ninety second year.  As the Rev. Mr. Osgood, feelingly asked in the close of his sermon, "Upon whose shoulders shall their mantles fall."

RICH - LIZZIE BLANCHE - Salisbury Cove, 1891

BLANCHE  RICH

Bar Harbor Record
July 2,  1891

Miss Blanche Rich, who died at Kennebunk with La grippe on the 17th, was born in Salisbury Cove in 1873, and a few days before her death had passed her 18th birthday.  She was left fatherless at the age of ten, her mother struggling hard to keep her family together until two years ago when she too, was laid to rest.  Since her mother's death, Blanche had made her home with her aunt, Mrs. Palmer, who moved to Kennebunk last September, Mr. Palmer being Pastor of the Baptist Church at that village.  They administered to her kindly during her sickness.  She had been in poor health all winter, but her friends had no idea that the end was so near, and were nearly overwhelmed with grief when they heard of her death, for they were looking forward to her visit home this summer with much pleasure.  She was a bright, active girl, and had gained many young friends in Kennebunk as was shown by the number which accompanied the remains to the  station at ten o'clock on the night of the 17th.  Her relatives at Salisbury Cove will always remember with kind feelings the people of kennebunk, especially the nurse who was home from the hospital on a vacation and offered her services, also the bearers for their beautiful floral tribute.  A large procession from the church at Salisbury Cove followed her remains to their last resting place. Many tears were shed over her peaceful repose, and she will not soon be forgotten.

WASGATT - JULIA ANN - West Ellsworth, 1889

JULIA  ANN  WASGATT

Bar Harbor Record
March 28, 1889

Sister Julia Ann Wasgatt, wife of John Wasgatt Esq. of West Ellsworth, departed this life March 6, 1889, aged 69 years 8 months and 2 days.
Sister Wasgatt was the daughter of the late Moses Wasgatt of Bar Harbor, whose father, Thomas Wasgatt, moved from Massachusetts to Duck Brook, Bar Harbor, and reared a large and interesting family,  soon after Mr. Abram Somes settled at Somesville, A.D. 1782.
Her Uncle, the late Davis Wasgatt, was the first represenative from Mount Desert to the General Assembly of Mass., and was an enterprizing and influential citizen of that town.  Her cousin, Sarah R. Wasgatt, married the late John Clark and became the mother of Bishop Davis W. Clark of blessed memory.
Sister Wasgatt was a lady of gentle and amiable disposition, holding a large place in the hearts of her friends, and never making enemies.  She was a life-long invalid, suffering from chronic disease which would have unnerved a less trustful and devout nature, and yet she never murmured at her lot.
She was frugal and simple in her habits, quiet and unobtrusive in her religion, gentle and retiring in her relations to others, a constant and ardent friend, a cheerful and affertionate wife, a loving and devoted mother, a kind God.  She has gone to her rest, and entered upon her reward.
Her afflicted husband and lately widowed daughter, Mrs. Simeon H. Richard of Eden, will receive the tender smpathy and sincere condolence of their many friends.
