WOODARD - AVON B. - Dexter
DEXTER, Avon B. Woodard, 88, died Dec. 31, 2000 after a long illness. He was born in Pittsfield on July 8, 1912, son of Valentine White and Herbert E. Woodard. He was raised in Pittsfield and attended Maine Central Institute, of which he had many fond memories. At the age of 15 the family moved to Dexter. He married Philixina A. Pooler in 1933. They had two children, Avon Timothy and Evelyn Jean Woodard. In 1995 Avon made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and was baptized at Center Pond. During his lifetime Avon was involved in a variety of occupations he built his home and workshops; he collected and sold scrap metals; he built truck bodies; he worked in the woods on his own woodlot; he drove a pulp truck; he had a whitewashing and steam-cleaning business with his son; but much of his life was spent in area woolen mills where he worked various times as a foreman, a mechanic, an electrician, and a production worker. In his younger days he was much sought after as a mechanic on early gasoline engines. Some of his most enjoyable times were spent on his motorcycles, both in his early years when he had an "Indian" motorcycle and his later years when he had his Honda.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Philixina Pooler Woodard, his son Avon Timothy Woodard and his wife, Beryl and their six children Irene, Steven, Timothy, David, Leslie, and John; his daughter Evelyn Jean Field and her daughters Sally Kallgren and Julie Glidden; and 15 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a granddaughter Katherine Field, and by a brother Harold Woodard Sr.; and a sister Inez Evelyn.
