DOW - CARL IRVING - Dixmont

Spencer Ma. and Dixmont Carl I Dow 85 died Feb. 16, 2004 at a Worcester Ma. health care facility following a long illness. He was born in Mt. Chase, Me. April 24, 1918 the son of George A. and Marion (Lynds) Dow. Carl was educated in Newport schools. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of WW II. He was married to Barbara Bates who died Aug. 6, 2003. For over 30 years Carl was employed as a custodian at Quaboag Regional High School in Warren Ma. He was a member of the Spencer Ma. American Legion.

He is survived by his son and his wife Elliott and Dorothy Dow of Cambridge, a step daughter Irene Loguercio of Pleasantville N.Y., one brother Lawrence Dow of Buxton, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by two sons George and Roy also seven brothers and threes sisters; Angus, Hilton, Douglas, Milford, Lewis, Roger, Roscoe, Lena, Inez, and Ella.

Milford Dow Presque Isle 63. Died 9-22-1977 in a local hospital following a brief illness. He was born at Moro Plantation 10-11-1913, the son of George and Marion (Lynds) Dow. He was a member of State Street Baptist Church and a US Army Veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Zula (Burden) Dow and a son Milford, both of Presque Isle, 2 daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Vona) Steinman of Presque Isle and Mrs. James (Lois) Glatz of Carnegie PA., 7 brothers, Doug of Newport, Ward of Palmyra, Angus and Lewis both of Dixmont, Carl of Spencer, MA., Lawrence of Compton, NH. and Roger of Hampton, VA. and 3 sisters, Lena Dow of Dixmont, Inez Hodge of Newport, and Ella Gray of Southbridge, MA., 3 grandchildren, Bethany and Gregory Steinman and Joshua Dow all of Presque Isle, several nieces and nephews. Burial Fairmount cemetery.

Lena May Dow 78 died Jan 27, 2003 at a Pittsfield hospital following a short period of ill health. She was born in Newport April 8, 1924 the daughter of George A and Marion (Lynds) Dow. She attended Dixmont and Newport School and was a graduate of Newport High School. Lena was a member of the Dixmont Methodist Church in Dixmont and a member of the Dixmont Ladies Club. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and making quilts for her family and friends. She loved to read, enjoyed sewing and loved life to the fullest. She is survived by two brothers Carl Irving Dow of Spencer, Mass and Lawrence Dow of Buxton Me., several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters Angus, Douglas, Lewis, Inez Hodge, and Ella Gray. Friends may call from 1 to 2 PM Thursday at the Brown Funeral Home 34 High St. Newport. Funeral services will follow at 2 PM Thursday at the Funeral Home with Pastor Al Worden officiating. Spring internment will be in the Sawyer Cemetery Plymouth. CHAPMAN - FRANCIS E. "PIPER" - Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor - Mrs. Francis E. Chapman, 77, wife of Charles Chapman, died July 5 at Bar Harbor hospital. She was born at Beddington, August 8, 1894, daughter of Frank and Lilly Bralley Piper.

She was a member of Unison Rebekah Lodge; Bar Harbor; Canton de Mont, Bar Harbor; Mt. Desert Eastern Star; and Saint Saviour's Episcopal Church, Bar Harbor.

Surviving besides her husband of Bar Harbor are one son, Robert, of Bar Harbor; two sisters, Mrs. Ada Anderson of Harrington, Mrs. Bernice Rummery of Hampden Highlands and one grand child..

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Saint Saviour's Church, Bar Harbor. Burial will be in the Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor.

Hoyt Couisins and family spent Sunday at Northeast Harbor.

Mrs. Lella Tripp of Machias Normal School Faculity was called home by the death of her cousin, Mrs. Cora Smith of Somesville. Mrs. Smith was born here at Town Hill and spent her girlhood days here. Her parents than moved to Somesville at which place she died. She is survived by two children, Arthur Smith of Northeast Harbor and Mrs. Hollis Higgins of Bar Harbor, and also by one sister, Mrs. Hattie Parker of Somesville and a brother, David Branscom of Northeast Harbor. Her family has the sympathy of all.

PLAISTED - AARON APPLETON - Waterville

Aaron Appleton Plaisted was born in Waterville, at the Asa Faunce house, foot of Main street, March 25, 1831. He is the son of Dr. Samuel and Mary (Appleton) Plaisted, his mother being a daughter of Dr. Moses Appleton. He was educated at Waterville Academy and Waterville College and was graduated with Phi Beta Kappa rank, in the class of 1851. He taught in Bloomfield Academy, 1851. At Shelburne Falls, (Mass.) Academy, 1852. After studying law at Harvard Law School, he became partner of Hon. Samuel Wells at Portland. From 1856 to 1858 he practiced law in Dubuque, Iowa. Returning to the East he became cashier of Ticonic Bank, continued in the same office with the Ticonic National Bank and gave to the in­stitution thirty-eight years of able and successful service. Dur­ing a part of the war period Mr. Plaisted was Assistant Collector of Internal Revenue; he has been a member of the prudential and other important committees of the College. September 23, 1856, Mr. Plaisted was united in marriage with Miss Emily Carleton Heath, daughter of Hon. Solyman Heath. Their children are, Appleton Heath, who succeeded his father as cashier of Ticonic Bank; Philip H., who has kept up the honorable record of the Plaisted drug store until 1902, when he sold out the business; Helen Florence, a successful teacher in Coburn and Waterville High school; Sheridan, who was graduated at Colby in 1886 and Emily Redington. Mr. Plaisted's long residence in Water­ville and his connection with many of the old families has enabled him to render very valuable aid to the editors of this volume. The chapter on "Early Settlers and Their Work" is from his pen.

BUNKER - JOHN E. - Trenton

The community of Trenton was saddened Sunday by the death of John E. Bunker at 2 p.m.. For two months Mr. Bunker had been a great sufferer and recently submitted to an operation for the removal of his foot, from the shock of which he never recovered. Mr Bunker was a man of marked personality, a reader and a thinker. He took great interest in national affairs and was always keenly alive to events of the day. Though long past four score years, until recently Mr. Bunker had enjoyed excellent health.

His death will be felt keenly among the neighbors and lifelong friends whose homes surrounded his own, and here in Bar Harbor where he was known and respected. But most deeply will his loss be felt among the sons and daughters, six of whom survive him. Dr. D. Wellington Bunker and John F. Bunker Jr., of this place, Miss Belle G. Bunker of Trenton, Dr. Luther Bunker of Waterville, Mrs. George Chapman of Augusta and Mrs. Ernest Kenniston of Amherst.

Funeral services were held yesterday.
